It’s bigger , tougher and reliable. It’s Hummer
In the early 80’s American military was bidding for a new transport vehicle that could carry troops and heavy cargo anywhere.
They needed a high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle
AM motors made a product that was designed for rough uses ,it could get up and over slopes , it had a switch that can inflate or deflate the tires , it can be dropped out by plane wearing it’s parachute.
AM General was awarded one billion dollar for mass produce this beast to US military.
Those cars were ready in 80’s and were called as HUMVEE.
HUMVEE was a military vehicle , for military purposes. They even were equipped with rocket launchers.
They never thought of making vehicles for Road cars for civilians. but what changed their mind??
Yes, you heard it right…!!!
When Arnold Schwarzenegger took a break from shooting of the movie ‘Kindergarden Cop’ , he saw a convoy of hummers passing on the road. He was like “‘Oh my God’…What a car!!!” It was love at first sight.
The car was for only military uses, he could not buy it. But it clicked an idea to AM General to make a multipurpose vehicle for civilians too.
In 1992, Arnold Schwarzenegger , Mr.Olympia recieved the very first civilian version with brand name of HUMMER.
By Late 90’s it had become a celebrity hallmark.
It was now one of the biggest brand of SUV manufacturer.
In 1999 GM bought the rights to the Hummer off of AM General.
In 2002 hummer launched H2 (a baby hummer). this model was lithe and toned instead of muscle bound and bulky. It’s weight was around 8600 pounds… (YES,It was lighter than previous one)
In 2005 hummer launched H3 a more lighter version weighening 5800 pounds. And it was the lightest version of any hummer model manufactured ever.
Due to it’s weight , the fuel economy was too low.
It also attractted a disproportionate amount of criticism from environmentalists because it was not much eco-friendly.
The increasing prices of Oil and Gases was now a matter of concern for the company.
But before they did something , In 2009 global financial meltdown .It bankrupted General Motors.
One day prior to GM’s annual shareholder meeting, Rick Wagoner, GM’s CEO at that time, said the brand was being reviewed, and had the possibility of either being sold, having the production line completely redesigned, or being discontinued .This was due to the decreasing demand for large SUVs as a result of higher oil prices.
It had reached a deal to sell the brand to “China-based Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company Ltd”.
Later, on February 24, 2010, GM announced the Tengzhong deal had collapsed and the Hummer brand would soon shut down Hummer.
And from further no more models of Hummer are manufactured.
Most GM dealerships will still service the Hummer and provide parts.
